It’s easy for a loved one to begin to feel unloved or neglected when these behaviors continue.
However, if the loved one understands that this is more of a problem with misfiring neurons than a problem with feelings and neglect it can do a lot to swing into problem-solving while avoiding hurt feelings and fear that a relationship may be falling apart.
This isn't to say that I think, "I'll drive an hour to the zoo," but more like, "Oh, I also need to get three things at the grocery," followed by, "The car is dirty - the car wash is right up the street," followed by, "I could use a cup of coffee ...
and a scone," which is then followed by, "Well, while I'm here, I might as well look at the newspaper." Not all ADHD folks are like this, but it happens sometimes with me.
Perhaps the most important among these might be honesty and openness.
A request for something as I go out the door and that is not on the shopping list is rarely granted; reminders to make a stop on the way home are often forgotten.
